She Has Somewhere to Be. The Dog Is Ready. The Coat Is Red Because It Has Always Been Red. The Wall Knows Where It Belongs.

Against a warm sand-textured ground — the ground of a Mediterranean stone wall that has seen many afternoons and developed opinions about them — a woman stands at the edge of a stone step. Her coat is red. Not a suggestion of red. Red in the way of something that has decided to be red completely and has no reservations about this. The coat is long. The coat has volume. The coat has the specific generous cut of something made for someone who walks places worth walking to. Her hat is wide-brimmed and black with a red note at the band that says: yes, this too. Her bag is red and held at her side with the ease of someone who has carried this bag many times and considers it part of the sentence. Her shoes are red and they are on the step because she is going somewhere. She faces slightly away, in the way of someone who is already thinking about where she is going, which is somewhere specific and interesting. Beside her, a black greyhound stands at the same angle, wearing a red collar, looking up at her with the composed attentiveness of a dog who has been on many walks with this woman and considers this partnership one of the better arrangements available. They are the same height in spirit. They are going to the same place. The painting is executed in the warm, textured style of contemporary folk art figure painting applied to fashion-figure subject matter with full commitment — impasto-influenced sandy ground, simplified bold figure with confident silhouette, the specific visual elegance of a composition that uses very few elements and gets every one of them exactly right.

Why You'll Love It

• The finest chic fashion figure and greyhound canvas available — full-length red coat, wide black hat with red band, red bag, red heels, black greyhound with red collar, warm impasto sandy ground, stone step, going somewhere worth going — the red is complete; the silhouette is confident; the greyhound is exactly the right dog for this woman; the composition uses four colors and gets all four exactly right; this is fashion figure painting done with the visual authority of someone who understands both fashion and painting
• Contemporary folk art figure painting at its most elegantly executed — impasto-influenced sandy Mediterranean wall texture, bold simplified figure with architectural silhouette, warm red and black and stone palette — the figure has no face because the figure does not need one; the coat and the posture and the hat and the bag say everything; the greyhound looking up completes the composition; this is the visual grammar of sophisticated figure art applied with complete confidence
• The living room, bedroom, and fashion-forward interior’s most elevated figurative canvas — and the piece that makes every neutral wall immediately more interesting — the warm sand and stone palette works with every neutral interior from modern farmhouse to contemporary minimalist to Parisian eclectic; the red coat provides the focal point; the greyhound provides the warmth; the composition provides the gallery quality
• Dog lover meets fashion lover meets fine art collector — the only canvas that speaks fluently to all three — the greyhound in its red collar beside the red-coated woman is the specific image that greyhound owners, Italian greyhound devotees, and elegant dog enthusiasts have been waiting for at this level of artistic quality; it is here now; it belongs on a wall

"She had been wearing red for as long as the coat had been hers. The dog had been beside her for as long as the collar had been red. The step was stone. The wall behind them was warm. They were going somewhere. They were always going somewhere. The coat knew this. The dog knew this. The wall was glad to have been the background for it."
