He Did Not Ask to Be a Pickle. He Has Made His Peace With It. He Is, at This Particular Moment, Very Clean.

In a clawfoot bathtub the color of old terracotta, against a background of warm amber stripes rendered in thick, dragged oil paint, a pickle sits in the water and looks directly at you with the large, round, completely undefended eyes of a creature that has processed its situation and arrived at acceptance. He is bumpy. He is green. He has tiny hands on the rim of the tub and he is using them with the dignity of someone who has standards even now, especially now. The painting style is warm impressionist impasto — visible brushstroke, physical paint texture, the amber and ochre palette of a Dutch interior shifted sideways into something funnier and considerably more vegetable. This is the piece that makes everyone in the room stop, look, make a noise, and then want to know where you got it.
