He Stepped in It. He Cannot Believe He Stepped in It. He Would Like Everyone to Know That He Did Not See It Coming and That This Is an Outrage.

Against a background of deep swirling dark — teal and black and the shimmer of reflected light on moving water — a white Persian cat stands in the water with his mouth open and his eyes at full capacity, expressing in real time the complete and total betrayal of a creature who has been ambushed by a puddle and has not yet decided whether to escalate. His fur is immaculate. His expression is not. The water catches gold light from somewhere and throws it back in ripples that frame him like a stage. He is the main character. He has always been the main character. He simply did not expect the floor to be wet. Executed in the deep, layered oil technique of classical portraiture — rich dark ground, luminous white fur built up in transparent glazes, the dramatic chiaroscuro of a Dutch master applied to a subject of considerably more immediate emotional stakes — this piece is simultaneously the funniest and most technically accomplished cat painting in your zip code.
